Gold City - Moment of Truth

- Les Butler
Saturday, November 01, 2008

There’s never been a Gold City vocal configuration that I haven’t loved...Ivan, Brian, Mike and Tim? Loved ‘em! David, Mark, Jay and Tim? Fantastic! Johnathan, Jay, Danny and Tim? Wow! Today's line-up includes Josh Simpson (piano), Danny Riley (baritone), Steve Ladd (tenor), Aaron McCune (bass) and newcomer, Bruce Taliaferro (lead). It's yet another, incredible Gold City and they are presenting one great recording. Not only will Moment of Truth not disappoint long-standing Gold City fans, it will bring new fans to the fold.

The opening song, “Don’t Get Me Started,” mainly features the quartet. They do allow Bruce to cut loose. Bruce has it all—power, range, tone and delivery. Danny Riley is featured on “What Children Believe.” This is a song that could just as easily be played on country radio, as well as Gospel radio. Danny’s singing on this entire CD is off the charts. Te song “I Cast My Bread Upon the Water” is surely Gold City's next No. 1 song. Aaron McCune does some mighty fine bass singing on this song, and Steve Ladd adds a burst of energy on the last chorus.

Speaking of Aaron, he covers J.D. Sumner’s “Walkin` and Talkin` With My Lord,” with perfection. Something tells me J.D. is smiling and punching George Younce in the side, saying, “That McCune boy sings a high bass like you, but he’s pretty good at it.” “I’ll Walk On” is one of several radio singles. Mid-way into the song Steve really kicks it into gear. Great message, great vocals, great production.

“By Your Grace, For Your Glory,” has a classic Gold City feel similar to “One Scarred Hand” and “Once Upon a Hill.” This one is destined to be yet another in a long line of radio hits and fan favorites.

In my opinion, there are some groups whose songs shouldn’t be covered. The Cathedral Quartet is one of these groups. But with that said Gold City has covered the Cathedrals' hit, “Turn Your Back.” Aaron and Gold City pulled it off wonderfully.

Moment of Truth has 10 great songs, all worthy of hitting the repeat button. Fans, go to the back of this issue of Singing News and see when Gold City is coming to your town—and then go hear them do what they do best.
