In addition to the singers, Southern Gospel music has a rich heritage of incredible musicians, many of which today still tour and play in studios on today’s top Gospel and Country recordings.
A well known studio musician, who asked to go un-named, tells of being on the bus with the Goodmans. “Happy Howard” Goodman was always known for his animated piano style, especially when he “flipped” his hands up in the air while playing. The band and the group were on their way to a concert date. The TV on the bus was tuned to a variety show that had the great pianist, Liberace, as a guest. You may recall that Liberace, while playing the piano, also had a flair for “ flipping” his hands in the air as he played, kind of like Howard did when he performed. Upon glancing at the TV, and without taking time to note who the pianist was, “Happy” turned to Vestal and said…”Look Mom, that man’s copying me!!”
